Jeath Kruppley, School Librarian

Krumbodia Middle School, Krumbodia, Texas

If I had just of few moments of your time in the teacher's lounge, by the mailboxes, or after a staff meeting to tell you how important the library is to all members of the school community, here is what I would say.

I believe that the library can positively affect student achievement in literacy, and that this is the core of our work in preparing our students for academic and personal success in their lives. If lifelong literacy is our ultimate goal, then library-teacher collaboration is the tool that helps the students reach this goal. How can we achieve this?  First, not only can I assist you by locating materials to enrich lessons, I can also co-teach with you. This benefits our students because we can teach specific reading strategies and because we are able to work with smaller groups of proficient and less proficient readers.  Another way to improve literacy is to grab the student's interest in reading.  With my experience and knowledge of your curriculum and the great literature found in the library, we can work together to help students choose reading materials that are just right for them. With book talks by students, teachers, administrators and parents, we can model and promote reading as a lifelong interest. The possibilities for working together to improve student literacy are endless. Why don't you come on in and  join me for a cup of coffee, so we can discuss a few of them?
