Dr. Moreillon was invited to speak to the HISD school principals at their back-to-school meeting. She began by sharing this VoiceThread elevator speech.

She paused the VoiceThread to engage principals in a think-pair-share about their experiences with school librarians. At the end of the VoiceThread, she offered strategies for applying this information. After this discussion, she presented them with research related to coteaching and classroom-library collaboration for instruction in action (follow the links below).

School librarians are essential faculty members who can help you achieve your goals for your school’s academic program. Did you know that the American Association of School Librarians charges school librarians with five roles? Leader, instructional partner, information specialist, teacher, and program administrator

 

In Texas, all certified school librarians have served as classroom teachers. School librarians are teachers plus. They have added the knowledge and behaviors of a school librarian to their classroom teacher skill set.

 

Combining their teaching background, knowledge of their school's physical and electronic collection of resources, and expertise with technology tools, school librarians are perfectly positioned to serve as instructional partners with classroom teachers and specialists. In this role, school librarians have the potential to help principals achieve school-wide improvements in teaching and learning.

 

Stop the VoiceThread, ask, and discuss: Have you asked your school librarian to be your partner in raising student learning outcomes and your faculty members’ effectiveness?

 

When educators coplan standards-based lessons, coteach, and coassess student learning outcomes, your faculty are practicing job-embedded professional development. When educators coteach, students receive more one-on-one support with two educators to model, monitor, and guide their learning. When they coteach, educators learn from one another in real time with real students, actual curriculum, resources, and tools. Educators benefit from having a partner with whom they can reflect and problem solve. Through this form of professional development, school librarians can help you achieve improvements in instructional practices at your school.

 

With your support, school librarians can serve as teacher leaders. They can help you meet district, state, and national learning goals. Together, you and your librarian can work to build a culture of collaboration in which every student and every educator in your school has the tools they need to ensure student achievement. With a shared global view of the learning community, you and your school librarian can team up for success!

 

Strategies for Applying this Information:

Ask your librarian to provide you with a collaborative planning and teaching schedule as well as coplanned lesson plans. Please stop by the library any time and expect to see classroom-library collaboration for instruction in action. Let your state-certified school librarian show you what students, teachers, and librarians are learning—together!
