Three School Librarians in the same school district joined forces by offering to be guest hosts to welcome Elementary School Principals in the learning community to the first monthly Principal’s meeting.

Who:  10 Elementary School Principals
What:  Principal's Professional Learning Community (PLC) Monthly Meeting
Where: Sharon Coatney Leadership Learning Center Elementary School Library
When:  8:00am - 10:00am, September 2012

Why:  Principals engage in a monthly meeting to exchange ideas of how to improve student academic achievement that is responsive to the needs of the students in the same geographic area of the school district.

The Principals were greeted warmly at the Library by the School Librarians with morning refreshments, including muffins, bagels, fruit, coffee, tea, and other beverages.  The tables where the refreshments were located were set up with important marketing tools (mugs with the School Librarian logo and menus highlighting the importance of School Librarians).  As Principals settled in for the start of the meeting, the School Librarians gave them a welcome, reminded them that School Librarians are always there in support of student academic achievement, and shared their elevator speech via Camtasia/YouTube.

Elevator Speech Script: "Librarians--The Leading Ingredient"

Soooo. As a principal, you’d like to create the next-to-perfect school. The recipe for whipping up such a school includes one part student achievement, one part ongoing staff development, one part collaborative teaching among your faculty, aligned with state and national standards, and a healthy portion of 21st century technology, utilized by students and faculty. And what is the leading ingredient in this recipe for academic greatness? Your school librarian, of course!

Was that not the answer you expected? Well here is why it’s the right answer.

Through our unique training and educational experience, school librarians are equipped to step forward and collaborate with teachers and co-teach with them, work directly with students in instructional capacities, and train teachers and students to become 21st -century learners.

We understand your concerns. Student achievement, measured by standardized tests. Providing teachers with ongoing professional development, hopefully creating a staff that uses evidence-based instruction and technology. And blending together a culture of collaboration with innovation. School librarians are professionally equipped to help you with all of those issues, so that you don’t have to worry about putting any of them on the back burner.

Today’s school librarians should be doing more than just read-alouds and checking books in and out. We have the skills to collaborate, co-teach, and plan meaningful lessons with other teachers. And we can help you provide the job-embedded professional development your faculty needs. We take these responsibilities seriously and understand how to work together with other faculty members for the sake of the students. Utilize your school librarian as the leader they are trained to be, and you’ll see student achievement go from simmer to boiling hot!

At the conclusion of the meeting, the School Librarians invited the Principals to take the mug and menu as a keepsake, and encouraged them to partner with their School Librarian to implement the vision of their goals.
