Elevator Speech Transcript:

Good Evening and welcome to Thornton Elementary School's 2013 OSCARS ceremony. Tonight we gather to recognize the common purpose that brings us together.  And that is Our Students Care About Reading, or the "OSCARs". First, I would like to say thank you! Thank you to the teachers. Teachers you have a very intricate role in the lives of students, and I want to thank you for allowing us—librarians—to enter into your domain, and develop a partnership that is an asset for our 21st century learners. Thank you to our library supporters, parents, students, and community for your contributions through participation, donations, and volunteering. Finally, thank you to administration, for allowing the voice of the librarian to be heard, and the role of the librarian to be fully played out. Librarians are truly the supporting cast behind award winning schools and play a critical role in the success of teachers and students. As the supporting cast, sometimes the librarian's role is not always visible. Nevertheless librarians are a crucial component to the formation of a successful and award-winning campus. Studies have shown a positive correlation between student achievement in reading and quality strong school library programs. These same studies also found that in higher achieving schools the librarian collaborated more often with colleagues. When librarians are cast in a co-teaching role with classroom teachers, the entire school benefits. In the words of Sally Field, "I haven't had an orthodox career, and I've wanted more than anything to have your respect. The first time I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it, and I can't deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!" (Khurana).
