Elevator Speech Transcript

Hello, I am very excited to speak to you about the positive impact that certified librarians have in the school community. I would also like to tell you about how we can help with student achievement. Did you know that librarians are certified teachers and instructional partners? We constantly strive to utilize what we have learned in our professional development to strengthen our instructional partnerships. By attending professional conferences and keeping abreast of the most current research in our field, we are able to implement best practices into our collaborative relationships. Through collaboration, the school librarian can help spread new and better methods of learning throughout the school community. In this way, both the teachers and the librarian can experience professional growth. Therefore, collaboration with your school librarian is like having on the job professional development.

The school librarian is a valuable resource in teaching literacy skills to students and in sharing knowledge with our colleagues in professional development settings. As a librarian, my goal is to work in a collaborative learning environment, which I believe fosters student academic achievement. Research regarding the efficacy of librarians collaborating and co-teaching has revealed that when the librarian works as an active instructional partner, standardized test scores increase. Studies show that principals' support helps facilitate teacher-librarian collaboration, which, in turn, promotes student achievement. We believe that teaching students should be a cooperative effort among teachers, librarians, and administrators.

The school librarian shares a similar vision to principals about impacting students. Like you, we have a global view of the school community and feel a shared responsibility for students' academic success. As we all work together as instructional partners, we will see great success!

As you can see, having a certified school librarian is crucial to the 21st Century learning environment.

Marketing Tools

After the meeting, Ms. Goode-Reeder and the other librarians passed out a take-away bag to the administrators. In it was a folder with the Success Library newsletter, a Programs & Services brochure, and the elevator speech.  The bag also contained a bookmark, a keychain and a Hershey’s candy bar.
